Will Harrold showed some excellent early-season form in top company at the International Series Macau.

The Norfolk professional – in his rookie season with a full Asian Tour card – finished in a share of 21st place after some dazzling golf in the final two rounds.

Harrold only just made the cut on the mark, birdieing his final hole from 20 feet to move to four-under-par.

That lit the touch-paper for a weekend scoring spree in which he carded rounds of 66 and 64.

Harrold rose 39 places to finish on 14-under, nine shots back from the eventual winner, the US’s John Catlin.

The Sheringham golfer, who earned $20,300, closed out on the same score as Sergio Garcia and three strokes in front of Ian Poulter.

Harrold, 35, said: “I was putting really nicely all week. Statistically, I think I only missed one green in regulation on the Sunday, but I was also able to drop a lot of putts.”

Harrold is now 52nd on the Order of Merit and his pleasing display provided a big boost after he missed the cut by a single shot in his previous event, the International Series Oman.

He added: “Oman, to be honest, completely broke me down. I struggled to enjoy any part of that week on a golf course I really liked and the competition got to me. 

“We haven’t got enough space to go into details, but the truth is it helped me face some fears in Macau and I did a much better job of managing myself out there.”

The early-season swing of the Asian Tour is now complete and Harrold has four weeks off to recharge the batteries – as well as fine-tune his game.

His next event is the Saudi Open at Riyadh Golf Club and then there are a couple of tournaments in Korea, in which he is not guaranteed a start. 

He said: “It's a slow-burn start of the year with lots of breaks, but it will get very busy in the autumn. I'm actually okay with another long break – I need it so I can continue to work on my game. Not so much the technique, but my approach to tournament golf and how I can continue to bring practice and competition closer together.

“Practice will be high intensity, but not necessarily a lot. When I do practice I will be working on my performance and golf behaviour, making my practice fun and on-course work competitive.

“After Saudi there is another break until May. If needed, I may play a couple of Asian Development Tour events in Thailand in May to fill some gaps. In early July I’ll have the International Series Morocco and the Karen Classic in Kenya.”
