Vandals have bashed up yet another north Norfolk public toilet block in what has become an ongoing problem for the district.

The toilets at Lushers Passage in Sheringham, just off the town's High Steet, were attacked at the weekend, with toilet seats, hand dryers, hand soap and toilet roll dispensers being damaged.

Vandalism was also reported to a shelter in North Lodge Park, Cromer, and to the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer.

Councillor Tim Adams, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) leader, said the damage was costly.

Mr Adams said: “We have spent the best part of £10,000 repairing the damage because of vandalism to our public toilet facilities this year and it is likely we will exceed this figure with this latest among numerous incidents."

Norfolk police said the Lushers Passage toilets were vandalised at around 5.30pm on Saturday, December 3.

A spokesman said: "No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."

Steve Blatch, NNDC's chief executive, added: “It is disappointing that further mindless vandalism has occurred over the weekend to public toilets and other assets provided by the district council.

“Every incident of vandalism has a direct cost to the authority and local council taxpayers – money spent on repairing damage caused by vandalism is money which cannot be spent by the council on other services and facilities."

Mr Blatch said NNDC would work with the police to identify the vandals. Any witnesses should contact PC Ian Smith on 101 or email Ian.Smith@norfolk.police.uk quoting 36/92888/22.

He said the council would: "Look to prosecute or pursue community payback restorative justice measures to try and protect our assets and facilities for public use in the future.”

Other targets of vandalism in recent months have included the public toilets in Albert Street, Holt, a playground in Neil Avenue, Holt and heritage railway posters and a former collectors' cabin in Cromer

In June, a bench in Spout Hills park in Holt which was dedicated to the memory of volunteer John Allison was smashed up to the point where it had to be replaced rather than repaired.
